At Nic's Knacks, safety is never an afterthought — it's baked into how every event runs, from the paint on our brushes to the space we set up in. This policy outlines what we do to keep things safe, and what we need from you to make it happen.
Hygiene & Product Safety
All paints used are cosmetic-grade, TGA-compliant, and specifically formulated for skin use — never craft or acrylic paint.
Brushes and sponges are washed and sanitised between every single client. No exceptions.
Fresh water is used throughout the event and changed regularly to avoid cross-contamination.
Allergies & Skin Sensitivities
We ask about allergies or skin sensitivities before every design.
A patch test can be done on request — just ask before we start.
We won't paint over broken skin, cuts, cold sores, eye infections, or irritated areas.
Face painting is not provided for children aged 3 and under, in line with our skin sensitivity guidelines.
If a reaction occurs during or after the event, please stop the activity and seek medical advice if needed. We're not liable for reactions where allergies weren't disclosed beforehand.
Supervision & Consent
Children must remain seated and reasonably still while being painted — a parent or guardian's help with this is genuinely appreciated.
Children under 10 need a parent or guardian nearby during their turn.
For community and public events, a parent/guardian must remain responsible for their child at all times — we're there to paint, not to supervise.
We reserve the right to decline a design or pause painting if a child is unwell, distressed, or unable to sit safely.
Event Space Requirements
To keep the line moving safely and give every guest a good experience, we ask event organisers to provide:
A flat, stable patch of ground to set up on — we bring our own gazebo, table, and stool
Enough clear space around our setup for guests to queue and be painted comfortably
Access to power if the event runs into low-light hours (we'll confirm in advance if this applies)
Reasonable protection from strong wind and dust where a gazebo alone isn't enough, which can affect both hygiene and paint quality
If suitable space isn't available on the day, we may need to pause, relocate, or shorten the session for safety reasons.
Weather & Outdoor Events
Face painting will be paused or postponed in the event of extreme heat, storms, or heavy rain, for the safety of both artist and guests.
For outdoor bookings, we recommend organisers have a wet-weather or shade contingency in place.
Decisions to pause due to weather are made on the day and are non-negotiable where safety is a concern.
Queue & Crowd Management
We ask organisers to help manage queues at larger events, particularly where lines may block walkways or fire exits.
A designated waiting area helps us paint efficiently and safely without crowding around the artist's space.
First Aid & Incidents
We carry basic first aid supplies for minor issues (e.g. a small skin reaction).
Any incident during the event will be documented, and organisers/guardians notified immediately.
For anything beyond minor first aid, we'll direct you to the event's designated first aid provider or emergency services.
Insurance
Nic's Knacks holds public liability insurance for all bookings. Proof of coverage is available on request for event organisers or venues that require it.
Our Right to Refuse or Pause Service
We reserve the right to refuse or pause a design if:
A client is unwell, has an undisclosed allergy risk, or has broken/irritated skin
The event environment becomes unsafe (weather, crowding, lack of space)
A guest is unable to remain still or safe during the process
This isn't about being difficult — it's about making sure everyone leaves with a great design and no regrets.
